Unbroken sunshine, mile upon mile of sand and surf and friendly hospitality are the ingredients that make tropical islands incredibly popular destinations for our vacations. And the good news is that there are so many great islands to choose from, the only problem will be deciding where to go, especially if you are looking for a tropical island vacation on a budget.
One of the most popular stops for those looking for a taste of secluded paradise are the Seychelles – a group of over one hundred islands located off the east coast of Africa. With the islands scattered in the perfect blue waters of the Indian Ocean, the beaches here are beautiful with three of the most popular destinations the islands of Praslin, La Digue and Mahe. As well as providing ample opportunity for simple relaxation, the Seychelles are also the ideal place for scuba diving and snorkelling and are home to the world’s largest coral island Aldabra while Praslin is also home to both the world’s rarest black parrot and an enormous coconut that takes at least half a dozen years to mature.
The Maldives is the collective name given to over one thousand islands in the Indian Ocean, which have been grouped into twenty-six coral atolls. Only a couple of hundred of these islands are inhabited and you can count those that have any substantial population on one hand, arguably making these some of the best tropical islands for family holidays. Again there are pristine white sand beaches and excellent snorkelling and diving opportunities to enjoy, although one downside is the expensive nature of several of the private resorts on offer. With the islands barely sitting above sea level, global warming is a worrying factor to consider and much damage was done by the Tsunami of 2004 although flood barriers have now been built.
A popular choice amongst young people and those on their honeymoon is Fiji which offers a vast choice of some three hundred and twenty-two islands to explore although less than a third of these are inhibited with more to see and do in the west of the region. These islands are great for those who like to be active with everything from hiking to kayaking and all the usual water sports on offer. These islands are also popular amongst honeymooners, as they offer some of the best romantic tropical island vacations in the world.
Located in the Western Caribbean Sea, the Cayman Islands are a group of three – Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac. This trio of islands present diving opportunities for everyone from beginners to experts with both reef and wreck diving on offer, not to mention that these probably offer some of the best tropical island vacations in the Caribbean. A large dose of courage is required for the spectacular dive at Bloody Bay Wall that has a sheer drop of six thousand feet!
Places such as those mentioned above are all very popular holiday destinations, but there is many more tropical islands ideal for vacations that may not immediately spring to mind. These include St Martin; a Caribbean Island split into French and Dutch sides, the beautiful Turks and Caicos Islands, the Cebu Island that is located in the heart of the Philippines providing some great diving sites, the escapist Cook Islands and St James in Barbados, which is often referred to as the ‘Little Britain of the Caribbean’. These are just a few examples of the vast world of tropical island getaways.
